Preparing Storage Tanks for Hurricane Season

The official start of hurricane season is just around the corner. Last year, the nation suffered a series of devastating storms in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico that crippled parts of the country’s energy supply chain and caused untold devastation. That’s why savvy energy players are preparing for storm season well in advance.

Even if you don’t operate in a hurricane-prone area, strong storms can still strike and wreak havoc. Whether you face polar depressions in the Upper Midwest or Rocky Mountain thunderstorms in the Mountain West, there’s no shortage of adverse weather patterns that can damage your oil storage tanks and adversely affect your business prospects.

Thankfully, there are a number of ways you can keep your refinery storage tanks in Colorado operating safely, even during the most oppressive weather. Obtaining routine tank maintenance can help you ensure that your tanks are in tip-top shape, no matter the exterior conditions.

Here are just a few things you can do before the next major weather even strikes that will ensure that your fuel supply is safe, and that your storage tanks are capable of weathering the next storm:

  • Stay on schedule: In advance of a storm, the most important thing you can do is ensure that you’re staying on top of your tank maintenance and fuel delivery schedules. If you know a storm is about to strike, it may be wise to schedule an extra appointment.
  • Keep tanks full: You don’t know how long roads and utility services will be out of commission in the days following a major weather event, which is why it’s important to keep your tanks full. Well-maintained tanks aren’t much help if they’re not holding anything!
  • Test fuel for contaminants: Before the storm strikes, test your fuel for any microbial growth. Because storms often cause the surrounding areas to be exceedingly damp for extended periods of time, they’re often followed by bacterial growth in fuel supplies that can ruin your fuel and your storage tank.
  • Filter the fuel: The day before the storm makes landfall, filter your fuel to remove any impurities. It will be much better to have your fuel on hand and ready to use before the weather gets bad.
  • Remove water and apply biocide: After the storm passes, be sure to remove any extraneous water from the storage tank and the surrounding areas. Even if there’s no water in the fuel, water on the outside of the tank could cause condensation to form inside. Then, apply a biocide to prevent microbial growth.
